Susan Rawcliffe makes, plays and research clay musical instruments: flutes, pipes, ocarinas, whistles, trumpets, didjeridus, and sound sculptures. Wanting to build a better flute, she began my research into the sounds and forms of archaic ceremonial flutes from prehispanic meso-American cultures, including West Mexican, Olmec, Mayan, and Aztec. Making acoustical studies of ancient flutes teaches Rawcliffe construction methods. Learning to play them unites a Western sensibility with ancient sounds and can illumine the next step in a flute’s creation.

the2vvo (pronounced “the zwo” = “two” in German) is a sound and visual duo formed in 2014 in Almaty, Kazakhstan and currently based in Los Angeles, Ca comprised of Eldar Tagi (sound artist) and Lena Pozdnyakova (architect). Coming from different disciplines, artists share unbounded love for exploration in terms of spatial approaches and experiments within the field of sound art. Results of these studies are often expressed in temporary installations that are interactive and sound-centric. We explore and study the juxtaposition of public vs private in the context of space and sound.

David Casey's current artistic practice is based at the intersection of kinetic sculpture and sound installation. His strongest recent work in this area, entitled, "Why I Stopped Playing the Guitar," is a kinetic sculpture examining the history of the electric guitar and its changing value as more of our sound and music is being made by machines. An electric guitar, suspended from a pulley/motor system at the ceiling, repeatedly smashed on the floor of the gallery while plugged in to an amplifier. This auto-destruct sculpture functioned equally well as both a visual and a sound piece.
