I admire the way that Renos Apostolides used to read the poems. He had a passion about transfering the world of the poem through his voice. That's why I decided to use for this miniature his voice, with the rich timbre and dynamic changes.

An hiatus
For the past two years, I've explored some of the stories that live in my stomach and diaphragm. As I probe the memories, myths, and metaphors that shape my understanding of my body, I wonder: how do these stories bear witness to trauma and violence? How can I rewrite these stories? How can they help me practice more unruly ways of being alive? What lurks in the gap between the body I know, and the body I am forever emerging into?
I learn so much from my vital organs. True to the descriptor, they are wonderfully alive -- and incredibly talkative. Here, in An hiatus, I invite them to conversation. What you hear and see is a transcript of our dialogue.

sublimeControl/subliminalControl
sublimeControl/subliminalControl started out as two distinct poems created from virtual modular synthesis patches in VCV Rack 2; constructed through sequencing the Surge XT Twist Oscillator, which includes a vocoder type virtual synth with a limited vocabulary. Processing of the poems led to integrating them into each other as an amalgamation; allowing the listeners to devour meaning while the audio devours itself. The growl was initially the word generate, now slowed to sublime rising growl with a rumbling echo, and all that remains from the first poem, Sublime Control. Subliminal Control consists of the words universal filter control alpha echo and the shimmering echoes that they create giving other words, including friend. All the sounds in this piece come from the words, their reverberations, and their temporal deconstructions, offering a meditative opportunity to consider the invisible controls applied to oneself and one's life.

P(h)o(n)em(e)_short
A phoneme is the basic element of the majority of the languages all around the world. What are the vocal limits and their relation to the geographical boundaries? Hearing them is like hearing our roots and how much these are connected throughout the history. Exploring them could emerge our imagination of their future sound or form. Even more by associating them to the sounds around us, whether they are born from humans, animals, objects or everything else than can produce them. This piece is a first attempt to experiment and to experience the world of phonetics. I like to see it as an evolutionary sound poem.

About the artist:
Ilias Liosatos started by studying materials' science and his passion for the sound led him to work with a stringed instruments' maker. Since then he immersed himself to that abstract feeling of controlling each step of a sound object
manufacturing. Indeed the control of such a process is limited to "abstract" which ever since has its unique contribution in his sound projects. Today I'm still fascinated by this approach, which seeks to strike a balance between the concreteness of science and the "free will" of sound objects, whether analog or digital.

"Funeral in my Brain" is an adaptation/fragmentation of Emily Dickinson's poem, "I Felt a Funeral in my Brain." We use the poem as a frame to make sense of the experience of undergoing an MRI and viewing these images of one's insides. Accordingly, we've mapped the poem and a real MRI image of one of the artist's body on top of their body, and then perform the poem in harmony with electronic sounds imitating, mutating, and relating to the sounds produced by an MRI machine.

About the Artist:
Southern California-based Performance/Installation artist Takeshi Kanemura was born in Okinawa, Japan, and lives and works in Los Angeles. Kanemura has exhibited internationally in Japan, Taiwan, and the U.S. He received a BA from University of California, Riverside, an MA from California State University, San Bernardino, and an MFA from Claremont Graduate University. Kanemura has transcended traditional Japanese art and absorbed those practices into his current art form of mixed media performance art. With the influences of Japanese performance dancing called Butoh, traditional large scale Japanese brush stroke painting, and traditional music, Kanemura’s current pieces incorporate all these elements with Americanized flair, to humbly represent the new present-day American status: the amalgamation of one’s identity. Kanemura proudly displays the identity of the Japanese-American. His goals with his art are to promote cultural awareness and the embracing of all cultural heritages.

Audio presentation, Program #3 October 29th:
Bioacoustic Variability
Bioacoustics as a means of data collection is a unique and developing field. Soundscape ecology allows for biological research through the application of biophonic sound intake (species identification, biodiversity estimations, etc.), but also presents the increasing intervention of anthropophonic sound and its implications.

"Bioacoustic Variability" examines birdsong recorded in Long Beach and in San Pedro’s White Point Nature Preserve. The reception of birdsong by the human ear has been studied and interpreted scientifically, recreationally, and spiritually. "Bioacoustic Variability" receives and manipulates this sound and the created environment, as human interference disrupts the natural and instinctive communication & processes of its organisms.

Audio presentation, Program #1 October 27th:
Wire Ghost Garden
In the Wireghost Garden is a generative sound piece which arises from a simulation of spring networks, physically modeled resonators, and synthetic tape delays. Once initiated, the system runs autonomously creating an ethereal but somewhat threatening soundscape of uncertain acoustic ecology.

A modified version of this piece was exhibited as part of a geolocated technologically-mediated soundwalk at Studio 300 in October of 2021 at Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky.

About the artist(s):
Chad Eby creates work, by turns stark and whimsical, that explores humanity's fraught relationship with made objects using sound, light, and digital tools.

He is fascinated by the complex relationships between digital and physical objects and between artists and autonomous art-making systems. He has never had a day so good that it could not be improved by a great cup of coffee.
