Sound Poem “Dictator's Signature” for voice solo, or other sounds. (2022)
An endless cycle of disaster, tragedy, and death.
In the current year of 2022, if you look closely at my score and listen to my works, it should not be difficult to guess which dictator I am referring to.
In addition to using vocals to express scenes related to dictators, wars, and massacres, this work can also be used as a performance medium in any way, such as musical instruments, objects, and even electronic music.(As the subtitle says: "for voice solo, or other sounds.")

Something Nonsensical
“Something Nonsensical” examines the use of AI and its relationship to artists and their art. Using a poem generator, a simple PD Patch, and some software for ciphering the generated text, we created the entire piece with the simple prompt, “Something Nonsensical”. In a time where AI is commonplace, and artists are examining the validity and role of this tool for making art, we explored the idea of creating a predominantly computer-generated piece of work and then reintroducing the human element. The pd patch intermingles these elements: while the poem and sounds are created entirely with a computer, it needs a human voice to activate it, bringing it to life. The power balance between the intelligibility of the reader and the disruptive patch allows the audience to question: who is the performer and who is the filter? Are you able to make something solely through the process of random generators and have a meaningful connection to it? Or is it something nonsensical?

About the artist(s):
nostoppinganytime is a Los Angeles based duo featuring Eric Lennartson and m a harms. Using drums as resonant bodies, field recordings, and everyday objects, they deliberately create a chaotic atmosphere. Pressing, intense, and observant, their improvisations span a wide range of energies. Much like hanging out around a campfire, they navigate sharing emotions, stories, and life experiences around shared setups through the medium of their improvisations.

AHKESPLUM deconstructs and reconstructs Abigail's improvised gibberish. The text imitates an improvised passage of deconstructed words in one of Abigail's improvisations. Abigail reinterprets this transcription as quickly as possible to transform the text while Jack adds a slowly enveloping distortion to build the intensity of this poetic outburst.

About the artist(s):
Mystic Elevator is an improvisation duo using live vocals (Abigail Whitman, she/her) and electronic loops (Jack Herscowitz, he/him). The two are LA-based and perform in a variety of indoor and outdoor spaces throughout the city, adapting their sound to respond to the environment in which they find themselves. Abigail explores new ways of sound production with the voice by using extended techniques such as screaming, word deconstruction, gibberish, and haunting melodic lines. Jack carefully distorts these sounds through live processing in Max/MSP, deconstructing the very core of the voice and isolating minute details of performance.

Listening with my father
This project is a meditation on navigating my father's rapid loss of hearing and collaborating together as a improviser and composer and listeners. My father has worked with heavy machinery most his life, loves music, and loves to listen to and to tell stories. Navigating hearing loss informs our work together and new ways of listening/composing. This new work is a meditation on the visual as sound and ways to listen through hearing loss. These new visual and sonic scores emerge from working with new ways to communicate through sound via listening with my father.

Mariah Anne Johnson

VBODOBV [sounding videos]:
Rehearsal
I explore the lived reality of bodily experience in the landscape through art making. I use my body as a tool for direct exploration of the world around me, defining edges, filling spaces, and calling attention to natural phenomena.

Sound has recently become an important trigger for and component of my creative work. During the years of the COVID-19 pandemic, as family life became compressed and time distorted, I began to notice the sounds that populate my existence; chief among these is my son’s daily piano practice. Rehearsal is a response to this experience of repetitive listening: focusing energy and attention, anticipating mistakes, balancing emotional involvement with intellectual detachment, and coming to understand a musician’s own patterns of breath, variation, and hesitation. The overlapping images and recordings illustrate this accumulation of layers of sensory experience.
