soundpedro 2021 Call for Submissions

2020 was a transformative year for soundpedro with the event pivoting from being on-site to going completely virtual. On the fly, a whole new infrastructure was built.
Happily, it provided the benefits of expanding the reach of ear-oriented works and the number of experiences. soundpedro 2021 will continue to evolve in accordance with the COVID situation. No matter what, the virtual event will continue, either as a stand-alone event or in counterpoint to the on-site, should that happen.
soundpedro 2021 will start on Saturday, June 5th, 2021 (Laurie Anderson's birthday, born 1947)
(On-site event, if it happens, 7pm-10pm; virtual starts same day 7pm continuing to National Listening Day, November 26, 2021).
FLOOD seeks ear-oriented art: on-site works to be placed throughout the Angels Gate Cultural Center (indoor, outdoor), and virtual off-site renditions.
Work must address sound and aural perception; the option of aurality/hearing in combination with other senses is welcome.
We encourage participation that explores or incorporates acoustics, psychoacoustics, electronics, audio technologies, listening actions, performance actions, spatialization, conceptualization, timbralization, hearing anatomies, found sound, environmental sound, and AI.
It is important that artists understand that soundpedro is a sound art event and not a music event. Work that is characterized solely by the elements and hierarchical use of pitch, melody, rhythm, tempo or meter will not be considered. Work may examine the interface with which music and sound art overlap or juxtapose musical content with sound to help further express the differences relative to aesthetics and ways of listening.

MORE THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE APPLYING
- It is helpful to view and read the soundpedro website in order to become familiar with the event and venue.
- Visit soundpedro2020schizophonia to see how we adapted our 2020 event due to COVID-19.
- On-site work can be interactive or self-contained (e.g. sculptures, environments, installations, timed and ongoing performances, interactions, and presentations).
For on-site works, we encourage works that respond to and generate interplay with some aspect of Angels Gate Cultural Center as a specific place. For example, artists may consider aspects of history, geography, and purpose, and create site-responsive works that affect the viewers’ perception and understanding of place and their relationship with it. - If you are local, we encourage you to visit Angels Gate Cultural Center in person. Keep in mind that most of the artist studios are not accessible during the event and, therefore, not available to soundpedro artists.
- Set up is on the day of the event starting at 10AM. Tear down is that night, immediately after the event. Artists cannot begin set up before the time and date, or come the day after for tear down. Approach this as if it were a pop up.
- For installed works, artist(s) or artist representative(s) must be on site to install and de-install.
- Keep in mind that Angels Gate Cultural Center can be subject to high winds. If you are proposing an outdoor piece, please ensure that it is stable and wind tolerant. It can also get quite dark after sunset, so artists planning outdoor works should consider location and/or incorporate lighting elements.
- Earmaginations are ear-oriented silent videos that explore and synthesize ideas, images, and visual conceptualizations informed by or responding to the dynamics, the interplays, and the aesthetics of various auralities and deafnesses, hearing and listening. Videos will be displayed outdoors and indoors, on multiple surfaces.
We are looking for silent videos (up to 4 minutes) that can include visualization of such themes or actions as: acoustics. psychoacoustics, audio technologies, spatialization, timbralization, environmental sound, hearing anatomies, synaesthetic responses to sound, imagined aural response, connection of sound and hearing to sight and seeing, autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR).
For submission, DO NOT upload video to ArtsuZe. Please provide video URL only, hosted on YouTube or Vimeo (can be unlisted or public but not private). The submitted video must include 8 seconds of intro and outro with work title (in italics), artist name, and year of creation, using white text on black background, centered to the frame, on three lines, preferably fade in/out to black. *If your work is accepted, we will request you to send your mov, mp4, or m4v file via Google Docs, Dropbox, WeTransfer, etc. Final video render quality should not not exceed 1GB. - See our FAQ & FUQ page for additional event and venue details.
- Non-acceptance, in many cases, is not reflective of the quality of the artwork submitted. Reasons for non-acceptance may include:

- The number of submissions relative to the amount of space available.
- The work under consideration may not be a good fit, aesthetically or thematically.
- The work did not appear to be completely realized.
- As the event grows, we are not be able to invite artists back with the same frequency for the same type of work, as in the past. However, we encourage returning applicants to consider submitting something in a new category. For soundpedro 2021, we will have the greatest capacity to accept submissions for the shuttle bus, Earmaginations, and outdoor roaming pieces.
We process all submissions via ArtsuZe.com. If you have not submitted to a soundpedro event before, you will need to create an ArtsuZe user account to complete the submission process.
- Register for an account at ArtsuZe.com
- Verify your account via an e-mail the website will send you.
- Return to ArtsuZe.com - soundpedro 2021 Call for Artists.
- Log in with the username and password you created to proceed with your submission.
